Model Minority Stereotype (MMS) and Mental Health

The model minority stereotype (MMS) is a belief that Asian Americans’ comparative success comes from their hard-work and perseverance, coupled with lack of barriers or racism against Asian Americans. This stereotype has had a complex nature since its inception, with an outwardly positive appearance that is fraught with negative implications for those affected. Employing diverse theories and models (e.g., stereotype threat theory, cognitive dissonance theory), we aim to illuminate the underlying mechanism of how MMS relates to a range of mental distress
